First, it's worth noting that I'm not a Catholic (I am a Christian...just not a Catholic), so I don't claim to understand the significance behind the various medals, saints, and so on...but this little story is just too much to pass on.
As I was leaving ICU the first time around (before triple brain surgery), one of the nurses, Vicky, gave me a St. Peregrine (I gather he's the patron saint of cancer patients—I didn't even know we had one). She'd been to Rome, had several blessed by the pope, and had, for reasons unknown, felt the need to bring two with her that day (she gave one to my mom, too). Anyways, she gave me this medal, and it was a very thoughtful thing for her to have done, and it meant a lot to me (when you've just been dealt a blow like I had, even seemingly little things like that can really make a huge difference in how you feel—a fact, while it's been lost on some (don't bother asking), is clearly obvious to most (THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR THE CALLS, FLOWERS, AND GENERAL EMOTIONAL—AND IN SOME CASES FINANCIAL AS WELL—SUPPORT!!!).
Just one problem: before I went in for surgery, the medal vanished. The safety pin it was on was still on the allergy-warning wrist band it had been on, but the medal itself was gone. My mom was planning on giving me hers, but never got that far.....
About a week later, while doing some general straightening up in my new (post-surgery/post-ICU) room in the cancer care unit, it just appeared...mixed in with a blanket that was under me in the recliner. It seems that someone, or perhaps that should be Someone, did not want me to have to part with that. I may not understand the specifics (the Catholic bit), but that much of it seems pretty clear.....
